Drei britische Personen angeklagt in $3 Millionen Betrug mit Evolved Apes NFT Sammlung

Briten angeklagt: $3 Millionen Ethereum NFT-Betrug mit "Evolved Apes" enthüllt

Three UK nationals are facing charges from the U.S. Department of Justice related to a $3 million scam involving the “Evolved Apes” Ethereum NFT collection. Mohamed-Amin Atcha, Mohamed Rilaz Waleedh, and Daood Hassan are accused of wire fraud and money laundering in what authorities have described as a pump-and-dump scheme.

The charges stem from a 2021 scheme in which the defendants allegedly convinced NFT collectors to purchase one of the “10,000 unique” Ethereum-based NFTs known as Evolved Apes, promising that these digital assets could be used in an online battle royale game. However, the trio managed to abscond with 798 ETH, equivalent to approximately $2.7 million at the time.

According to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, the defendants engaged in a fraudulent scheme aimed at inflating the value of digital artwork by making false claims about developing a video game. Instead of fulfilling their promises, they allegedly misappropriated investor funds and pocketed the proceeds.

The Department of Justice further alleges that Atcha and Waleedh aggressively promoted Evolved Apes, going as far as hiring an undisclosed social media influencer to market the project. This manipulation of the market to artificially boost the NFTs’ value is indicative of a pump-and-dump scheme, a deceptive practice where investors are lured into buying assets based on misleading information.

Waleedh, self-identifying as the lead marketing manager for Evolved Apes, attempted to retrieve funds that were stuck on an unnamed cryptocurrency exchange used by the group. Upon gaining access to the funds, he purportedly transferred them to a cryptocurrency address controlled by Hassan. This maneuver was part of the broader effort to swindle unsuspecting investors through false promises of a profitable video game venture.

The case underscores the prevalence of fraudulent activities within the cryptocurrency space, particularly concerning NFTs. The misrepresentation of digital assets and the exploitation of investors’ trust are serious offenses that have significant legal implications. As stated by U.S. Attorney Williams, the perpetrators of NFT fraud will be held accountable for their actions.

If convicted, Atcha, Waleedh, and Hassan could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. This punitive measure reflects the severity of financial crimes and serves as a deterrent to other individuals engaging in illicit activities within the burgeoning NFT market.

The broader context of the case sheds light on the prevalence of rug pulls in the cryptocurrency sector, where malicious actors capitalize on deceptive tactics to defraud investors. Recent incidents, such as the staged livestream involving a purported “mother and son” duo promoting the “LIVEMOM” token and the shilling of the “HANDS” meme coin by a pseudonymous creator, highlight the need for greater scrutiny and regulation in the blockchain industry.

In conclusion, the charges brought against the three UK nationals in connection with the “Evolved Apes” Ethereum NFT scam underscore the risks associated with unregulated markets and deceptive practices. The case serves as a cautionary tale for investors and showcases the importance of due diligence and vigilance when engaging with digital assets and blockchain technology. The legal proceedings against the accused individuals demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement authorities to combat financial fraud and protect the integrity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
